Internship Experience 2006

Bachelor of Landscape Architecture

Department of Landscape Architecture/

Regional and Community Planning

Kansas State University

Student Information & Requirements

Purpose: The objective of the Landscape Architecture internship program is to offer its students the opportunity to broaden their educational experiences by actively participating in a professional landscape architecture, architecture, planning and/or engineering office work environment.

Duration: The internship is a 28-week time period beginning in January and ending in August of the same year.

Participation: The internship experience is recommended for students who have fourth-year standing in the landscape architecture curriculum and have successfully completed their core courses through the first semester of their fourth year.

Approval: The Landscape Architecture Internship Director, Dan Donelin, must approve each internship.  Students interested in an internship experience must apply to the Internship Director prior to the beginning of Spring Semester.  A signed Internship Agreement between the Sponsor and the Student, stating the expectations and responsibilities of both parties, must be submitted and approved by the Internship Director before the internship begins.

Courses: Students who are considering participating in a 28-week internship should preregister for the following Spring Semester courses:

LAR 648, Design VI (4 credits)

LAR 741, Problems in Landscape Architecture

(Enroll in sufficient credits to complete professional elective requirements - maximum of 10 credits)

Student: The internship requires students to participate in the activities listed below.

Requirements:  Before a grade can be issued for the Internship, the following must be prepared and organized in a timely manner for faculty review.

Reports: Internship students will make bi-monthly reports of their daily experiences.  The reports will reflect their experiences related to such activities as office operations and procedures, client meetings, work assignments, design processes, and mentor reviews.  The reports will be well organized and presented in a business format (unbound) on company stationery and forwarded to the Internship Director before the last day of the month of February, April, June, and August.

The August report will also have concluding remarks by the Internship Student as to the value of the Internship experience and what they considered to be their strengths and weaknesses in performing the tasks which were assigned to them.

Sponsor’s Profile:  The student is required to prepare a presentation about the Internship Sponsor.  The presentation should include examples of projects with which the office is involved, the operating structure of the office, when the office was founded and its development, the names, professions and responsibilities of office principals and employees.  The presentation should also highlight the expertise and professional qualities of the office and its personnel.  See evaluation form.

Documentation for this requirement will be made in a Power Point presentation and presented to students and faculty of the Landscape Architecture Program the following Fall Semester.

Exhibition: Throughout the internship experience, it is expected that each intern will collect a broad range of exemplary graphic and written material.  The work is to be arranged as an image board and mounted for an exhibit during the Fall Semester.  It is expected that this presentation will be ready for display by early September.  The exhibition board will be 22” x 34” (or equal area), horizontal or vertical format.  See evaluation form.
